Microsoft Social Desktop Will Make Life Easy

While cruising through the blogs that I read daily, an article on TechCrunch caught my eye immediately. They talked about a new project from Microsoft called “Social Desktop” (hello, web 3.0 here we come!).

Social Desktop’s objective is to make everything on your computer easily accessible, and easy to tag or share with your friends. Sure, it’s quite simple to share a web page, or a picture you uploaded somewhere because it has a URL.

But what if you could share anything on your computer with a click or two of the mouse?

Instead of going through the process of uploading pictures, copying link locations, and all of that other stuff you do in order to share something with a friend or colleague, Social Desktop will tear down the proverbial “wall” that separates you (the user) from the beast (the internet).

Here’s some official wording from Microsoft (so that you don’t think I’m making this up):

microsoft-squareThe Social Desktop blends the Web and PC by embedding Web oriented sharing inside your desktop, allowing every document to have the ability to have a backing social URL for sharing without having to upload or copy or move it from it’s natural location. This url provides access not just to the file, but to a built in social experience which includes a rich preview of each item, comments, related items, tags, etc. Whenever friends comment with this social link via the web browser, the conversation is also available directly in Windows, and vice versa.

In other words, almost any type of file on your desktop will have a URL that you can share nearly instantaneously with whoever you want, or through social media services like Digg, Twitter, Facebook, etc. I could see this coming in very handy for internet marketers, because lets face it, after writing a blog post or creating some cool video, sometimes it’s a tedious job uploading them one by one to each and every social networking site. Anything that will make our life easier is good to go in my book.

The Bad News (from TechCrunch)

“Unfortunately, a Microsoft spokesperson told NetworkWorld that Social Desktop at this point is merely a research prototype which will not be a feature in Windows 7, nor will it be available for public use.”

So it doesn’t look like we’re going to see anything in the near future, but I don’t know, with the rapid advance of social networking and the sheer demand for it as more and more “regular” internet users dive into the social media world, I could definitely see this being pushed forward sooner than later.

What do you think? Will it make life easier? More accessible? Post your comments below.
